Spotted Hyena Research

Demography
Long-term monitoring of multiple hyena clans has allowed us to accumulate data sets large enough to address questions about population trends in hyenas. Here we can clearly see the value of long-term study of these long-lived mammals. Although White (2004) found no rank-related variation in cub survivorship during a 4-year study of hyenas in the Masai Mara, former graduate student Heather Watts  found huge effects of rank on survivorship when she looks at our data collected over a 15-year period.
